Air Freight from China: Cost, Transit Time & Expert Guide

Air freight from China is a good option when you need your goods faster than sea freight can deliver them. Air freight may cost more than traditional sea freight, but you get your goods delivered in days instead of weeks. If you need to understand how this service works, then welcome to our air freight process from China guide.

We’ll teach you how to compare quotes, choose a Chinese airport, what documents you need, how customs clearance works, and how to reduce shipping costs when using air freight from China to any country in the world.

What Is Air Freight from China?

Air freight from China means moving commercial goods from China to another country by aircraft. Depending on your shipping deadline and the type of cargo, your freight forwarder may book one of these services for you:

Standard air freight

Standard air freight is the normal option you choose when you have cargo that you want to arrive quickly, but does not require special handling.

Consolidated air freight

With consolidated air freight, your forwarder combines your cargo with shipments from other customers travelling on the same route. Consolidation usually costs 15 to 30% less per kg than booking on your own, but it adds roughly 3 to 7 days  due to consolidation and deconsolidation of everyone’s cargo.

Consolidation is good for you if you buy from several suppliers in China and want one shipment. Winsky freight can receive all your shipments from your suppliers, consolidate them in our warehouse, and then ship them together.

Priority and deferred air freight

Priority air freight is for cargo that needs to move as soon as possible. Your shipment receives higher loading priority and may be placed on an earlier or more direct flight. Airlines and forwarders charge more for this level of service because you are paying for speed and better access to limited cargo space.

Deferred air freight is the opposite. It is the cheapest air service and the first to be delayed when a flight is overbooked, so use it only when your delivery date is flexible. The forwarder has more freedom to use later flights or connecting routes.

Airport-to-airport and door-to-door service

Airport-to-airport starts at the departure airport in China and ends once your cargo lands at the arrival airport. Pickup in China, customs and duty payment, collection at the airport, and the delivery to your final address are all yours to arrange.

Door-to-door, on the other hand, covers the full journey, from factory pickup in China to delivery at your address. DDP goes one step further and includes import duty and tax in the price you were quoted.

When Should You Use Air Freight?

You should consider air freight when:

  • You need the goods within days rather than weeks.
  • You’re shipping perishable items.
  • Your goods are relatively small but valuable.
  • You are shipping samples, spare parts, electronics, fashion goods, jewelry, or luxury goods where faster delivery lowers theft or damage risk.

You may be better off using ocean freight over air freight when your shipment is large, heavy, low in value, and not urgent. Ask Winsky before shipping so we can give you recommendations.

How Much Does Air Freight from China Cost?

Air freight cost from China

Air freight costs depend on

  1. Cargo weight and volume
  2. Type of goods
  3. “Type of service used (express or standard)”
  4. “Origin and Destination Airports
  5. Current fuel prices
  6. Time of the season”

Customs and handling fees. Let’s break down what a typical quote includes so you understand better:

What an air-freight quote includes

Depending on what service you choose, an air freight quote may include:

  • Pickup from your supplier in China
  • Export handling and documentation
  • Air freight charges
  • Customs clearance service
  • Delivery to your address

Be sure to ask your freight forwarder what services are included in the quote before shipping.

How to Calculate Air Freight Costs

Air freight is normally charged using the higher of its actual weight and volumetric weight. This is called the chargeable weight.

Volumetric weight formula: (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 6000 = Volumetric weight in kg

For example, a carton measuring 60 × 40 × 40 cm comes to 16 kg volumetric weight. Even if the real weight of the cargo is 12 kg, you will be charged for 16 kg.

This means that bulky packaging can make your air shipment more expensive, so optimizing your cargo packaging greatly reduces your shipping cost.

Your landed cost is the full amount you spend to get the goods to your destination.

A simple calculation is: Product cost + China pickup/export costs + air freight + insurance + destination charges + customs duties/taxes + final delivery = total landed cost

For example, if your goods cost $8,000 and you spend another $2,000 on freight, clearance, duties, and delivery, your landed cost is $10,000.

The table below uses standard commercial air freight based on port to port shipping updated in September 2026. Remember that factors like fuel price, seasonal demand, flight availability, and disruptions can affect your shipping costs, so always ask for a quote before shipping.

Destination Typical Air Freight Cost (USD)
United States 4.50 -7.80/kg
United Kingdom 4 – 7/kg
Germany 4.8 – 7.50/kg
Canada 4 – 8.30/kg
Australia 4 – 7.20/kg
UAE 3.8 – 7.00/kg
Nigeria 4.5 – 8.00/kg
Singapore 1.5 – 2.60/kg

How Long Does Air Freight from China Take?

Air freight from China usually takes about 5 to 10 working days for standard service on many major routes. The exact time depends on your departure airport, destination, flight schedule, customs clearance, and whether you choose a direct or connecting flight.

While the aircraft may spend only one or two days moving between China and your destination, more time is spent collecting and preparing your goods for export, airport handling, customs clearance, and final delivery.

If your airfreight service is airport-to-airport, then expect your goods in 3-7 days. If you choose a door-to-door service, it may take around 5-10 working days because of the extra delivery time.

Direct versus connecting flights

A direct flight normally gets your cargo to the destination faster because it does not need to change aircraft at another airport. It costs more per kg but carries less risk.

An indirect or connecting flight may be cheaper, but can take longer because the cargo must be unloaded, transferred, and loaded onto another flight.

Air Freight Transit times from China by Destination

Destination Door-to-door
USA (West Coast) 5 – 10 working days
USA (East Coast) 6 – 10 working days
UK and Western Europe 4 – 8 working days
Northern and Southern Europe 6 – 10 days
Australia 3 – 7 days
Canada 3 – 7 days
Africa 5 – 7 days (Nigeria, South Africa)

Factors that cause Air Freight delays

Your shipment can take longer when:

  1. Airline cargo space is full.
  2. You book during a busy shipping season.
  3. Your cargo misses its planned flight.
  4. A connecting flight has a long waiting time.
  5. Documents contain missing or incorrect information.
  6. Customs selects your goods for inspection.
  7. Your goods need special security or safety checks.
  8. Bad weather affects flight schedules.
  9. Pickup or final delivery is delayed.

Main Air-Freight Airports in China

China Airport

China has many international airports, but a smaller group handles a large share of its air cargo. The main airports you are likely to use include:

  • Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG)
  • Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)
  • Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX)
  • Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK)
  • Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport (CGO)

How to select a departure airport in China

Always choose the airport closest to your supplier’s location. Moving cargo hundreds of kilometres across China before it reaches the airport adds time and trucking costs.

You should also check:

  • Available flights
  • Air-freight rate
  • Pickup cost
  • Cargo type
  • Delivery deadline.

Better still, simply discuss with your freight forwarder and they’ll advise you the best services to use.

Step-by-Step Air-Freight Process

China Air Freight Process

1. Send your shipment details

You give your freight forwarder information about the goods, including:

  • Pickup address
  • Destination
  • Number of cartons
  • Actual weight
  • Carton dimensions
  • Type of goods
  • Required delivery time

2. Receive a quote and book the shipment

Your forwarder checks available routes, airline space, chargeable weight, and service level before giving you a quotation.

Once you accept the price and terms, the forwarder books cargo space with an airline. Before you confirm, check whether the quote covers airport-to-airport or door-to-door shipping and which charges are excluded.

3. Your goods are collected

Your forwarder collects the cargo from your supplier and takes it to a warehouse or cargo terminal. If you buy from several Chinese suppliers, your goods can first be taken to our consolidation warehouse so we combine them before shipping to the airport.

4. Documents and export procedures are completed

The required shipping documents are prepared before your cargo leaves China.

5. The cargo is accepted at the airport

At the cargo terminal, the shipment is checked before it can be loaded. Cargo handling includes document checks, weight and size checks, security procedures, cargo acceptance, storage, and movement to the aircraft. Shipping special cargo may require extra handling.

Any problems discovered at this stage can delay your shipment, so the cargo description, packaging, labels, and documents should be correct before it reaches the terminal.

6. Your goods fly to the destination

The airline loads the cargo onto the booked flight. Your shipment may travel directly to the destination or pass through another airport first.

7. Your goods complete import customs clearance

After arrival, customs clearance must be completed before the goods can be released. You or your appointed broker may need to provide the commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill, import permits, or other documents required by your country. You may also need to pay import duties and taxes, depending on the incoterm you chose.

8. Your cargo is collected or delivered

With airport-to-airport shipping, you or your local agent arrange collection after customs release. However, with door-to-door shipping, the forwarder arranges the final transport from the airport or warehouse to your delivery address.

Documents Required for Air Freight from China

Documents vary by country, but most commercial air shipments use the following documents:

  • Commercial invoice: Shows the seller, buyer, product description, quantity, price, currency, and other sale details. Customs uses this information when checking the declared value of your goods.
  • Packing list:Shows how the goods are packed, including carton numbers, quantities, weights, and dimensions.
  • Air waybill (AWB): Issued by the airline or forwarder once cargo is accepted. Contains the main transport details for your air shipment. It may be issued electronically as an e-AWB.
  • Export declaration: Your forwarder uses this to declare the goods to Chinese Customs before export.

Documents needed in some cases

  • Certificate of Origin: You may need this when your destination country requires proof of where the goods were made or when you want to claim a lower tariff under an eligible trade agreement..
  • MSDS and UN38.3 test report.Needed for batteries, liquids, powders, aerosols, magnets, and many cosmetics.
  • Product compliance documents.FDA prior notice for food and supplements, FCC for radio-emitting electronics, CE or UKCA declarations for Europe and the UK, and CPSC certificates for children’s products.
  • Insurance certificate.Only if you bought cargo insurance, which you must arrange before departure.

How Customs Clearance Works with Air Freight from China

Customs Clearance

Your air shipment normally passes through customs twice, first when it leaves China and again when it enters your destination country.

For export customs clearance in China, your supplier or forwarder submits the required documents to Chinese Customs. After your goods arrive at the destination airport, the import clearance process normally follows these steps:

  1. The import declaration is submitted. Depending on your Incoterm, this is done by either your forwarder or your customs broker
  2. The goods are assigned the appropriate HS classification
  3. The customs value is checked
  4. Origin is checked where required. The country of origin can affect the tariff rate and whether your goods qualify for preferential treatment.
  5. Duties and taxes are assigned and you pay the amount due before release
  6. Customs releases the shipment. Your goods can then leave the airport or customs facility for final delivery.

Calculating Duties and Taxes

There is no single duty rate for goods shipped by air from China. Your amount depends mainly on:

  • What product you are importing
  • Its HS or tariff classification
  • Its customs value
  • Country of origin
  • Your destination country
  • Any applicable trade agreement or tariff relief
  • VAT, GST, sales tax, or other import taxes charged by that country

Different countries have different custom duties rules e.g., when shipping from China to the U.S., customs value is only based on the price paid for the goods and excludes international freight and insurance from the declared customs value.

However, in China shipping to the UK, the EU, Australia, Canada, and most other countries use CIF, meaning the goods, the freight, and the insurance are all inside the value that duty is charged on.

A UK example on $2,000 of goods with $600 of air freight and $30 insurance:

  • Customs value: $2,630
  • Duty at 4%: $105
  • Import VAT at 20% on value plus duty: $547
  • Total to customs: $652

The same goods entering the US would be assessed on $2,000, not $2,630. US shipments also carry a merchandise processing fee of 0.3464% of cargo value, with a minimum near $27 and a cap around $528.

Best Incoterms for Air Freight from China

Your Incoterm decides which shipping roles and costs belong to you and which belong to your supplier. For air freight from China, these terms are popular:

  • FCA (Free Carrier):Your supplier delivers the goods to your forwarder’s warehouse or the cargo terminal and handles export clearance. Then you or your forwarder arranges the main international freight. This is the air freight equivalent of FOB and the term most experienced importers ask for.
  • DAP (Delivered at Place):Your supplier arranges transport to an agreed destination. You normally handle import clearance and pay the import duties and taxes.
  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid):Your supplier or freight forwarder takes responsibility for transport, import clearance, duties, and taxes up to the named destination. It gives you the least logistics stress when shipping.
  • CIP (Carriage and Insurance Paid To):Your supplier pays the transport and provides cargo insurance to the named destination. CIP can be used for air freight and other transport modes.

Avoid using FOB or CIF for air freight. ICC rules limit these terms to sea and inland-waterway transport. FCA or CIP is normally more suitable when the main transport is by air.

What Goods Can Be Shipped by Air?

You can ship most normal commercial goods by air. IATA divides air cargo into general cargo and special cargo.

General cargo normally needs no special handling. This can include:

  • Textiles and clothing
  • Dry goods
  • Hardware
  • Many retail products
  • Non-hazardous machinery parts

Special cargo products can still travel by air but need special handling and documents. These include perishables, pharmaceuticals, live animals, temperature-sensitive products, and dangerous goods.

Pay close attention if your products contain:

  • Lithium batteries
  • Flammable liquids
  • Chemicals
  • Gases
  • Aerosols
  • Corrosive materials
  • Certain magnetic products

Tell your forwarder exactly what you are shipping before asking for a final quote. Do not describe battery products, chemicals, or liquids simply as “general goods.” Your cargo may be rejected or delayed if the airline discovers undeclared dangerous goods.

How to Reduce Air-Freight Costs

  • Optimize your packaging
  • Consolidate goods from several suppliers into one shipment..
  • Choose deferred service when your date is flexible.
  • Book earlier.
  • Divide your shipments; use Air freight for only urgent shipments and use sea for others.

FAQs

Airlines compare your cargo’s actual weight with its volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is commonly calculated as length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6,000. The higher weight is charged for pricing.

Yes, it is cheaper sometimes, especially for heavier commercial shipments. DHL Express is often better for small, urgent parcels, while standard air freight can be more economical as shipment weight and volume increase.

FOB is often the most practical choice because it works with air transport and lets you control the main freight. CIF can suit you when your supplier arranges transport and insurance.

Yes. Air freight works well for urgent FBA inventory from China. Amazon itself supports air freight through Amazon Global Logistics where available. Your shipment must still meet FBA requirements first.

For normal cargo, book about one to two weeks before your goods are ready when possible. During peak seasons or before major Chinese holidays, book earlier to secure space early.
